Why does FeedBlitz send updates when my blog has not changed?

Abstract:

This can happen when FeedBlitz has been configured to monitor your blog's home page (i.e. as an HTML page), and not its RSS feed. When FeedBlitz tracks an HTML page, such as your blog's home page, any change, no matter how small (such as a time stamp or an ad setting) will cause FeedBlitz to send the update, notifying you and your subscribers that it has changed (because it has changed, even if you didn't post a new entry).

The fix is to determine what your blog's RSS feed is - if you need help with this contact FeedBlitz support or our blog vendor's support group - and then configure FeedBlitz to track it.

Once you have your RSS feed's address, go to www.feedblitz.com/f?lists and update your syndication's set up to use this URL and not the plain address of your blog. Save your changes, and then use the diagnostics menu option to see the difference - you should see the individual articles, which means that you have successfully pointed FeedBlitz to the correct part of your site.

If this happens to you, you should check your blog to make sure that its autodiscovery links are correct, since FeedBlitz uses these to find your RSS feed automatically - and ending up with your blog's home page indicates that this process failed. It may also be failing for other RSS readers as well, so it is worth fixing. For more information on RSS autodiscovery links, see this page.

Are old blog posts emailed when I edit them?

Abstract:

We try very hard not to send out updates and edits to posts that have already been sent! For most publishers most of the time this works well, because we use the initial publication date to determine when a post is mailed, and that typically doesn't change.

If, however, you manually alter the date of the article in your blogging system, or your blogging system changes the publication date after an edit, there is a very low risk that the article might be re-sent, if the date has changed to a later day (because, by default, FeedBlitz only mails out "today's" posts, and so any changes made will have to make the post look like it's new "today").

One way to check what FeedBlitz sees for dates is to use the diagnostics feature. Go to www.feedblitz.com/f?lists, invoke your feed's popup menu, and choose the Diagnostics | Diagnostics option. You will see the dates as FeedBlitz interprets them (currently in US eastern time). That way you can see whether or not any changes you have made has moved a post into "today" , riskinig it being mailed out.

If you see your changes and want to stop it from going out, you have several options:

Pause the feed until tomorrow using the Actions... section of the popup menu (don't forget to come back and re-enable it);
Edit the post and move its date back to yesterday or earlier in your blogging platform (then re-check what the feed says in FeedBlitz);
Upgrade to Turbo On Demand and take manual control over which articles are sent. You have 2 weeks to cancel the trial if you later want to get back to normal.

What is your bounced email policy?

Abstract:

Like most email services, we differentiate between "hard" and "soft" bounces. A hard bounce is when an email address is no lomger valid. A soft bounce is for errors such as mailbox quota issues. Here's how we treat bounces:

If a bounce message is not unambiguously a bad email address message, we treat it as a soft bounce.
Unambiguous bad address bounces are treated as hard bounces.
An address with a hard bounce is marked for deletion immediately.
An address with a soft bounce is marked as undeliverable.
If an email is sent to an undeliverable and no bounce received 24 hours later, the address is considered to be good.
An address that remains undeliverable for more than 14 days AND has more than three soft bounces will be marked for deletion.
Addresses marked for deletion are processed at midnight, US eastern time.

When an address has been deleted, it may not be used to subscribe to any other FeedBlitz content. If the user is real and the delivery problems are resolved, they may request their account to be re-enabled by writing to FeedBlitz support.

In addition:

Auto responders for vacations and delivery confirmations are ignored.
Change of address autoresponders will be actioned (but please make sure your responder clearly states both old and new addresses).
We never send read or delivery receipt requests.
Unsubscribe requests recieved via ISP feedback loops are immediately honored.

Finally, it is important to note that if we cannot determine the appropriate email address from the bounce message, or the email address specified is not in our database, it is not possible for us to remove it. Under these circumstances, you can either:

When are emails sent out?

Abstract:

The standard (free) service starts shortly after 1am US eastern time; the emails are usually sent within one to five hours. Emails are only sent if there is a relevant post from the prior day. If there is a delay in a mailing it will usually be blogged about on the FeedBlitz News blog by 9:30 or so US eastern.

Standard (free) service publishers may change their time zone from their publication's syndication settings menu found at www.feedblitz.com/f?lists The time zone affects two items: when the email update starts, and what postst are included in it. Posts are included from midnight to midnight, local time (as determined by the time zone). The time zone update runs at 1:30 am time zone local time. The time zone setting is ignored for publishers with "Turbo" upgrades, as the Turbo settings determine when an update is sent.

For "Turbo" users, emails are sent depending on the "Turbo" frequency (hourly, every 4 hours, every 8 hours or every 12 hours). If there are no posts in the previous timeframe (1, 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours) then no post is sent. For users of the weekly and monthly "Turbo" features, the timespan used is the prior week or the same day in the previous month. Monthly and weekly updates go out shortly after midnight, US eastern time.

"On demand" is another option available when you upgrade to Turbo. It lets you manually control when to send an update out, and what to send. When you start an on-demand mailing, it presents you with a list of posts in your feed. Using check boxes, you can pick which articles to send, and then instruct Feedblitz to send the updates.

Finally, there is the "Express" version of Turbo. It delivers new articles automatically, within 15 minutes of your posting them. If you have a ping service, Express responds to an "extended ping" for immediate mailouts.<

My emails did not arrive / were not sent!

You need to figure out and address the following typical causes:

Things that can prevent the emails from being sent:

Your feed is or was down.
Your feed is password protected but FeedBlitz doesn't have the password information.
Your post isn't in the feed.
Your post doesn't have a date. FeedBlitz will attempt to determine the date using other techniques, but sometimes gets it wrong. Add the date to the posts and it will work.
Your post is in the feed but doesn't have a properly formatted date. Visit the RSS 2 specs here.
The date is formatted OK but is for a date that isn't "yesterday" (if you manually adjust dates this is almost certainly the problem. Don't do that).
To see whether your feed was sent (publishers only) go to www.feedblitz.com/f?Lists click the report icon (small pie chart ) and choose "posts sent" from the first drop-down.

Things that can prevbent a post from being received:

You're not subscribed to that feed
You did not confirm your subscription yet
You were deleted because of delivery / bounce issues
A junk filter is bllocking us

Can I limit the text in emails? I want readers to click through to my site

Abstract:

Yes. Once you have set up your syndication, click through to your syndication management page and select the edit icon for the feed you want to change. From the menu that appears, choose Syndication Setup | The Basics

Now you can choose the maximum number characters you want to limit your post to, and the followup call to action. When the mail is generated, posts longer than the length you specify are truncated back to the nearest whole word, an ellipsis ("...") added, and then your custom call to action written in underneath, linking back to the original post. When you limit posts, FeedBlitz removes any images and embedded links in the text is sends out; users have to click through back to your site to view images and any links you reference.

If you want headlines only, set the character count to zero and make the call to action field blank.

You can restore full posts by deleting the value in the maximum character count field.

Abstract:

For Bloglet import you will need your bloglet account information. Otherwise, for text import, go to http://www.feedblitz.com/f?Lists and click the menu for the feed. From the Subscribers menu, click import. An import option appears on the next screen.

For text and manual imports, you MUST be able to prove that the subscriber had knowingly opted in. Abuse complaints are investigated and your account will be immediately terminated without refund (if applicable) if you do no comply with FeedBlitz's terms of service.

We accept email addresses that are comma, semicolon, tab or space separated. Your file may have multiple addresses on a single line, or one address per line; it's all OK. After the import completes, you are emailed a report with summary information. Any errors are highlighted as well, so that you can fix them and retry if appropriate.

If a subscriber is already subscribing to a syndication, we do not send them an unnecessary notification email. It is therefore safe to import the same file several times; you are not sending multiple emails to the same address. It is not possible to resubscribe a user who has been deleted or who has unsubscribed by reimporting their email address.

The "Open analysis" reports give you some insight into how many of yoru recipients are actually reading your content (it isn't 100% accurate, however, because many users disable images in their emails).

No, there are no limits to the subscribers you can have in FeedBlitz. The file import is limited to files of 10MB or less, and the pasted values must total less than 16k in size. If you need more than this, wait for each import to complete before starting a new one.

By default, however, subscriber pages are shown in blocks of 250 subscribers at a time. Simply use the arrows at the top right of the table to navigate through your list, or choose "All" to view them all in one go. After you import you will receive an emailed report stating how many subscribers were imported, and why some were not (if any).

Id like to disengage the email notifications I receive every time someone confirms their email subscription to my blog.

But if you use rules in Outlook to process categories, you can define a rule in Outlook to filter out FeedBlitz emails before your category-based rules run. How do I change the credit card I have on file with you?

After you move your blog to its new home:

Replace the URL (web page address) there with the new address of your RSS feed at its new location (if you have an Atom feed, we prefer that for our own nefarious reasons).
Save your changes.
That's it! All your settings and customizations are intact.

Your updates will now come from changes made at your new address. Nobody even needs to know you changed blogging products if you don't want to tell them.

This means that your client is not displaying Unicode properly.

If you are using a web-based client (e.g. hotmail), make sure that you are viewing the page using Unicode UTF-8 encoding. Character encoding is usually an option on your right click context / command key menu, or in the "Character encoding" menu on your browser's view menu.

If your desktop email client is old it may need upgrading.

I have been blocked - what do I do?

As a security measure, if you fail to login successfully several times in a row, FeedBlitz blocks access to your account and sends you an email. In that email is a link which you must click to re-enable access to your account. If you cannot find the email you can have it resent to you by completing the lost password form. If the email does not arrive see the related article below on how to whitelist FeedBlitz.

Even though you are blocked from logging in until you reauthorize your account, blocked users still get sent emails if the feeds they are subscribing to change.

I am a TypePad user with FeedBlitz already - should I switch to the Widget?

Abstract: No. The widget makes it easier for new TypePad users to sign up, but offers no advantage to you if you already have FeedBlitz on your blog. The widget has certain restrictions, and switching may create a duplicate syndication, maknig it harder for you to manage your subscribers easily.

Abstract:

The FeedBlitz chicklet serves two purposes:

A link to your FeedBlitz signup form.
An updated subscriber count.

You can generate the code for the chicklet from the HTML generation page. Go to your syndication management page and click the HTML generation icon The chicklet code is in the callout on the right. The subscriber count is updated daily, and also after an import.

What is FeedBlitz's backup policy?

Abstract:

FeedBlitz uses dedicated servers only; nothing is shared.

FeedBlitz core service databases are backed up daily, and imaged to a dedicated backup server managed by our hosting service. This backup server is archived to tape daily. In the event of a catastrophic disk failure on the main database system we would expect to lose only that day's data. Losing more than this would require the drives of both our server and the backup system to fail AND for the off site tape backup to be unrecoverable. It's possible, but highly unlikely. The disaster recovery we have in place at the moment seems reasonable for the planned-for scenario (hard drive failure on the main database server).

The web site and executables are kept safely in multiple locations away from the main servers. Running production code can be recovered very quickly.

In the unlikely event that is is necessary, we will go to a backup database to recover data that was removed by a publisher; we require such a request to be made within 5 working days of the problem occurring.

Can I disable image verification?
